This means that these organizations often seek help through volunteering, donations, or even just spreading information. With so many organizations working towards the same goal, it can take time to know which you should be providing your time and money to. If you’re new to menstrual activism or just overwhelmed by choices, we’ve created a comprehensive handbook for your donations.
It is essential to highlight BIPOC-led non-profits working to provide aid to communities suffering from period poverty, improper access to OB-GYN resources, and general menstrual education. BIPOC communities suffer disproportionately compared to white communities when it comes to menstrual health education and access to hygiene products. These BIPOC-led organizations are helping their communities and asking for your aid so they can keep doing what they do best.
Code Red Co. is a group focused on de-stigmatizing menstruation and drawing attention to the inaccessibility of menstrual products and education to most BIPOC communities. They have several projects focused on aiding Indigenous communities and drawing together Black-led organizations for menstrual equity. They claim they want to “decolonize wellness” to move away from a society that criminalizes them and stigmatizes their struggles. Their Instagram is an active space for menstruators and provides menstrual education, discussion, activism, and resources.
Happy Period Organization is a collective fronted by Chelsea VonChaz, a period activist working hard to change the stigma surrounding periods and provide aid to low-income BIPOC communities. Their Instagram page features other organizations, individuals, and even companies focused on destigmatizing menstrual health and providing access to resources. They also feature a considerable amount of body positivity, showcasing different body types, skin colors, and the nitty-gritty aspects of periods, such as menstrual blood and tampon strings. They have been working on providing First Period Kits to low-income communities as well as Action Tool Kits to start out new menstrual activists.
The Pad Project began with the mission to provide period products to communities where they may not have access. They created an Academy Award-winning film called Period. End of Sentence, which has made it to numerous film festivals and is available on Netflix. The film highlighted the struggle for menstruating individuals in a village outside of New Delhi, India, and how a machine to help produce and sell menstrual pads changed their lives. On their website, they provide access to resources for education, advocacy, collaboration, and of course, donation. This is a wonderful project to support and collaborate with to give more access to communities in need.
Some younger individuals are impacting the movement since menstrual activism picked up speed. They want to provide education and access to communities that have been historically neglected and change the way we educate about menstruation as a whole. These youth-led organizations are making the changes they wish had been made for them.
This youth-led grassroots movement is devoted to promoting period equality for BIPOC communities as well as trans and nonbinary menstruators. They are also heavily focused on eradicating the pink tax and providing menstrual health products in all public bathrooms. They deliver direct aid to menstruators and have provided over 200,000 products to those in need. Your donations will go to active campaign efforts to help with global period poverty.
This is a global nonprofit that is youth-fueled and strives to provide aid to those experiencing period poverty, as well as eradicate stigma. They work hard to service impoverished communities by providing menstrual products to those in need. They have multiple chapters that operate globally so individual communities can get the attention and devotion they deserve. They were founded by two high school students in 2014 and have been primarily youth-led to grow their advocacy into what it is today. They also provide educational services, activism, and organization to further their agenda and help communities everywhere end period poverty and stigma.
]]>It’s actually very simple. Stretch marks are scars! Stretch marks appear when the skin rapidly stretches or shrinks. Because of the speed of change, the actual building blocks of the skin can’t keep up and rupture. Collagen and elastin are the main building blocks. When they rupture, stretch marks are born.
Stretch marks are associated with weight gain and loss and are common during puberty, growth spurts, muscle growth, and pregnancy.
If you have stretch marks, you’ll notice they come in different colors. They will appear red, purple, pink, or brown if they are new. Fresh stretch marks are often slightly raised and itchy.
Older stretch marks are faded and will look silver. You will feel a slight dip when you run your hand over them. These stretch marks have essentially healed and leave a slight depression similar to a scar.
Yes, stretch marks are genetic. You will most likely develop stretch marks if you notice your mother or grandmother has stretch marks.
Pregnancy is the other primary time stretch marks will form outside of puberty. Stretch marks occur due to rapid expansion of the skin, and growing a baby requires a lot of room, so the skin will need to stretch to accommodate. Throughout your pregnancy, you may notice stretch marks on your stomach and elsewhere between 6 to 7 months or your second and third trimesters.
Below are four simple everyday things you can do to prevent the development of stretch marks.
We love water, and we want you to love water too. Being adequately hydrated means the skin is also hydrated, meaning it is softer and more flexible. We recommend drinking 72 ounces of water a day, or nine cups. If you drink caffeinated beverages, be sure to double fist with water. Caffeine increases the risk of developing stretch marks.
Sun Bathe Responsibly
You don’t need to straight up avoid the sun. Healthy levels of Vitamin D help reduce the risk of stretch marks. Of course, there are other ways of getting Vitamin D. Outside supplements; you will find Vitamin C in bread, some cereals, milk, and yogurt. So, keep wearing your sunscreen and soak up the rays safely.
As weight gain and loss are the main factors for stretch marks, we suggest developing a safe and healthy relationship with monitoring your weight.
Simply put, the more colorful your plate, the higher the likelihood that you are eating skin-health-boosting foods. You should prioritize foods high in Vitamins C, D, E, and Zinc. When reaching for a snack, make sure you are relying on unprocessed foods. If you find this a little difficult, there are many supplements and resources online for healthy snack recipes.
There are procedures you can opt into to treat stretch marks. Below are the primary methods.
Both of these procedures stimulate and produce collagen and tighten elastin fibers.
Glycolic acid peels combined with micro-needling have proven effective. This combination has also been proven to work for stretch marks on darker skin tones.
Vitamin A, like retinoids and tretinoin, helps fade stretch marks but is most effective with newer ones.
Each method has its risks. Be sure to talk with your doctor and dermatologist before selecting either. These procedures are invasive, expensive, not guaranteed, and not always pregnancy-safe. So a conversation with your healthcare provider or a doctor through Orchyd MD™ should be your priority.
If you are uninterested in the above options, you have other solutions!
Dermaclara silicone patches are the perfect solution to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. These cost-efficient, non-invasive, chemical-free, dermatologist-approved patches effectively fade stretch marks and tighten loose skin.
The silicone creates a microclimate between the seal and the skin, stimulating collagen production and boosting moisture. As collagen is one of the main building blocks of your skin, having a boost is always a plus. The result is flawless, perfect skin.
Dermaclara is pregnancy safe and breastfeeding-safe! So you can use the patches throughout pregnancy, taking care of your expanding belly and the life growing inside. And you can use them after you have given birth when you are breastfeeding to treat postpartum stretch marks.
Now you know how to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy!
Once you have Dermaclara in hand, follow the steps below to see the best results.
Begin by cleaning your face with a soft and gentle cleanser.
Apply the silicone patches. The patches are versatile, so feel free to place them anywhere you think you need a boost. Leave them on for at least 15 to 20 minutes.
After the time is up, gently remove the patches and clean them. Let them dry before reapplying them to the backing card. Patches can be reused for 15 to 30 uses.
That’s it. Super simple and super effective. The founder actually suggests adding silicone patches to your nighttime skincare routine. That way, you can apply your patches, take the wait time to finish up nighttime chores and finish out with the rest of your skincare regimen.

Pregnancy tests detect the presence of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine or blood. hCG is produced by the placenta shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, and its levels increase rapidly during early pregnancy.
There are two main types of pregnancy tests: home pregnancy tests and blood pregnancy tests.
Home Pregnancy Tests, or Urine pregnancy tests, are the most common test used at home. It usually involves collecting a urine sample to test for hCG. If hCG is detected, the test will produce a positive result, indicating pregnancy.
Blood pregnancy tests are blood tests that can also detect hCG levels. They can detect hCG as early as 7 to 12 days after conception.
If you are having sex and suspect you may be pregnant, some signs and symptoms might prompt you to take a pregnancy test, such as:
Pregnancy symptoms can vary significantly from person to person, and some may experience few or no symptoms at all. Some of these signs can also be associated with other conditions or changes in the body. Therefore it’s essential to use a cycle-tracking app like Orchyd to track how you are feeling. From spotting to cravings, track your physical and emotional symptoms in Orchyd’s free data-secure app. Doctors are available 24/7 and on-demand via Orchyd MD™ should you have any questions about pregnancy, fertility, and more.
The best time to take a pregnancy test depends on the type of test you are using and your cycle.
The best time to take the test is after you have missed a period because hCG is typically high enough to be detected a few days after a missed period.
Take a test at least 10 to 4 days after having unprotected sex. Taking the test too early can result in a false negative because hCG levels may not be high enough to be detected.
Yes, taking a pregnancy test too early can result in a false negative. The hCG levels may not be sufficient for the test to register a positive result, even if you are pregnant.
If you take a pregnancy test too early and get a negative result but still suspect you might be pregnant or continue to experience pregnancy symptoms, you can retest a few days later. Waiting a few days to a week after a missed period can increase the accuracy of the test.
If you have concerns about the timing of your pregnancy test or the accuracy of the results, it's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance, perform a blood pregnancy test (which is more sensitive than some home tests), and help determine the best course of action based on your circumstances.
Stix’s Early Pregnancy Tests are an easy and accurate option for home pregnancy testing. Over 99% accurate six days before your missed period, Stix Pregnancy Tests help you get the most important answer in one easy step. Created with OB-GYNs, their pregnancy test is easy-to-use with simple instructions and clear results.
Before taking a pregnancy test, there are certain substances and behaviors you may want to avoid to ensure the most accurate and reliable results.
The time it takes to get the results of a pregnancy test depends on the type of test.
Most home pregnancy tests provide results within a few minutes. The specific time may vary depending on the brand and type of test you are using. Generally, you can expect to see the results within 1 to 5 minutes.
Be cautious of interpreting faint lines that may appear after the recommended testing time. These lines can sometimes be evaporation lines and may not indicate a positive result. Always read the test results within the specified time frame provided in the instructions.
The results of a blood pregnancy test can typically be available within a few hours to a day, depending on the healthcare facility's processing time. Some clinics may offer rapid or point-of-care blood tests that can provide results within a short period, while others may send the blood sample to a laboratory for analysis, which can take longer.
]]>Holistic medicine is an approach to healthcare that emphasizes the treatment of the whole person rather than just focusing on specific symptoms or illnesses like traditional medicine. This approach includes the physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental influences that can affect a person's overall well-being.
Approaching menstruation holistically can open you up to a new perspective. It can allow for a more comprehensive understanding and management of your menstrual cycle. Check out these benefits and suggestions for kicking off your holistic approach to menstruation:
Holistic menstruation considers factors like stress, nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional well-being, which all have a huuuge influence on your menstrual health–think of it like your body’s holistic ecosystem, where everything works together for a common goal. By balancing these factors, it may be possible to identify underlying issues contributing to menstrual problems such as irregular periods, pain, or other symptoms.
Holistic menstruation is tailored to Y-O-U, taking into account personal history, preferences, and menstrual symptoms specific to you. This individualized attention may lead to more targeted and effective solutions to relieve symptoms you experience during your menstrual cycle.
Considering the environmental impact of menstrual products and encouraging sustainable options like reusable menstrual cups or organic cotton pads aligns with a broader holistic perspective.
Holistic approaches to menstruation prioritize natural remedies and lifestyle changes. This includes modifications to your nutrition, exercise, herbal supplements, or mindfulness practices. These can help manage symptoms without relying solely on traditional medication and focus on wellness.
Recognizing the link between mental and physical health allows for implementing new approaches that address both. Incorporating practices, such as yoga and meditation, or talking with a support group or therapist, can help manage stress levels and emotional factors connected to menstrual issues.
Holistic menstruation allows for an opportunity to educate yourself about your body and align yourself with your menstrual cycle, which, let’s be honest…feels really great when you finally connect the dots of your cycle. This makes room to make informed decisions about your care and brings an awareness that can foster a positive relationship with your body and your menstrual cycle.
Integrating various therapies like acupuncture, massage, or herbal medicine with conventional care can offer additional support in managing symptoms and enhancing well-being.
For some, holistic menstruation is connected to spiritual beliefs and practices. A holistic approach to menstruation can honor and integrate these perspectives, fostering a more personalized and respectful approach to your cycle.
By focusing on the underlying causes and promoting an overall boost in well-being, holistic menstrual care has the power to prevent and/or alleviate menstrual problems before they become more severe or chronic.
Holistic menstruation emphasizes the importance of building a community and support system and acknowledges that social factors play a role in health. Taking the time to talk with fellow menstruators about experiences and symptoms may lead to understanding that you’re not alone. Coming together to discuss topics openly can lead to a more supportive and compassionate approach to menstruation.
When approaching menstruation holistically, collaboration between healthcare providers and menstruators and an openness to exploring different therapeutic processes is crucial. It offers a more nuanced and empowering perspective on menstrual health, supporting physical well-being and a positive, respectful relationship with your body and menstrual cycle. Chat with a doctor on Orchyd MD™ to create a healthcare strategy that works for you.
Cycle syncing is a great practice that aligns your lifestyle choices, such as nutrition, exercise, work, and social activities, with the different phases of your menstrual cycle. It’s based on the understanding that hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can influence various physical, emotional, and cerebral functions.
We get it, it may sound a little woo-woo to some, but pelvic steaming has amazing benefits. It’s also known as vaginal steaming, yoni steaming, or v-steaming and is a practice that involves sitting or squatting over a container of herbal-infused steam. The idea is that the warm steam and herbs may provide therapeutic benefits for the pelvic and vaginal area, such as promoting relaxation, detoxification, enhancing fertility, assisting in postpartum recovery, and overall support for your menstrual cycle. We love the Womb Protector Ritual by The Fullest, a powerful trio that helps with overall pelvic wellness and supports our cycle.
Where do we even begin with the benefits of seed cycling? With so many things out there to try for a more holistic approach to menstrual care, we advise starting easy and taking small steps to find what works for you and your menstrual health.
Here are some quick tips to start your journey to holistic menstruation:
Self care, two words we hear all of the time. You’re one google-search away from stumbling upon a slew of different routines to draw inspiration from – but what is it really? Self care can be defined as the process of establishing a healthy routine to ensure a sense of well-being, promote health, and actively manage stress levels for an overall more relaxed state of being.
Self care methods can be broken down into seven pillars that include mental, emotional, physical, environmental, spiritual, recreational, and social. The goal is to achieve a well-balanced self care routine that involves each of these pillars.
But let’s be real – raise your hand if you followed a self care routine that just didn’t stick. *We’d raise ours, but typing with one hand is a little tricky. This is why establishing one that works for you and your needs is far more important than adapting to one that may not fit your lifestyle.
Establishing a self-care routine that works for you is important for sooo many reasons:
It Reduces Stress: Life can throw all sorts of crazy curveballs: From burnout at work or friends and family demands – Life can be hectic as f*ck. Creating self-care activities can help reduce your stress levels and provide a greater sense of relaxation and calmness that you *so* deserve.
Physical Health Improves: Regular self-care practices, like exercise, eating nutrient-dense meals, and ample rest, can contribute to an overall increase in physical well-being. Showing your body some love through nutrition and movement that works for you has been shown to prevent illnesses, boost your immunity, and increase overall energy levels.
Boosts in Mental Health: Self-care plays a significant role in boosting your mental health. Creating a self-care routine aids in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Taking time for yourself allows you to recharge your mental batteries and improves your emotional health.
Increased Productivity Levels: Prioritizing self care practices can lead to becoming more focused, motivated, and productive – and who doesn’t love that? Taking breaks *yes, fellow workaholics, we’re talking to you* and engaging in activities or hobbies that bring you joy can reinvigorate your mind and improve your ability to concentrate on tasks. So, take this as your sign to sign up for that weekend pottery class or join in on that book club that meets every week.
Better Relationships: We’ve all heard the expression, “You can’t take care of others until you take care of yourself,” well – we think that’s 100% true. When we choose to take care of ourselves, we’re ready to be present to nurture healthy relationships with those around us. Self-care enables you to communicate effectively, set boundaries better, and constructively handle conflicts.
It Creates Self-Compassion: Creating a self-care routine is all about learning how to treat yourself with kindness and compassion. This practice helps us build a positive self-view and boost our self-esteem.
When it comes to our menstrual cycle, we are all about diving into our self care practices. Having a self-care practice for all phases of your cycle is especially important because menstruation comes with so many physical and emotional changes in your body. During this time, some menstruators may experience discomfort, pain, mood swings, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity. Creating self-care activities that work for you can help alleviate all symptoms and moods to better manage your cycle.
Symptom tracking is a great way to understand what you need when certain symptoms persist during your period. Tracking with the Orchyd App is perfect for knowing what to expect each month and how to adapt your self care routine to meet your needs.
For most of us menstruators, we can become fairly fatigued, and our bowel movements start to act a fool during our period. Not only will it give you peace of mind, but your hormones will thank you. We love doing so with the Ear Seed Kit by WTHN to reduce stress, relieve pain, and restore hormonal balance during this phase of our cycle.

Unlike pharmaceutical medications, natural herbal remedies typically have fewer side effects, making them a safer option for long-term use.
Many herbal remedies work by helping to regulate hormonal imbalances that contribute to PMS symptoms; these remedies can support the body's natural hormone production and balance.

Herbal remedies often incorporate nutrient-rich plants that nourish the body and provide a sense of comfort and nurturing during the challenging days of the menstrual cycle.
Of course, it is entirely up to you and your symptoms when it comes to figuring out what works. You may need to mix both herbal and Western medicine to achieve optimal comfort. Supplements like vitamin B6, magnesium, and evening primrose oil may help regulate hormonal imbalances and reduce symptoms.
Acupuncture has been shown to positively impact PMS symptoms by promoting relaxation and hormonal balance.

]]>Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive health system rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy and practices. It has been refined over thousands of years and is deeply intertwined with Chinese culture and history. TCM views the body as a complex network of interconnected systems where balance and harmony are essential for optimal health. It encompasses a range of practices, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, qi gong, and tai chi.
As we mentioned above, TCM is composed of multiple practices. Below we get into the details about each one, what they provide, and how they may help with the menstrual cycle.
This practice involves inserting thin needles into specific points along energy pathways (meridians) to stimulate the flow of qi (vital energy) and restore balance. Acupuncture has been reported to alleviate menstrual pain, regulate hormones, and reduce stress.
TCM incorporates a rich tradition of using herbs to address various health issues, including those related to the menstrual cycle. Specific herbal formulations are tailored to an individual's unique constitution and symptoms, aiming to regulate menstruation, alleviate pain, and promote overall well-being.
TCM emphasizes the importance of consuming foods that align with the body's constitution and the current season. Certain foods are believed to nourish and support the reproductive system, helping to alleviate menstrual discomfort and promote hormonal balance.
These mind-body practices involve slow, intentional movements, deep breathing, and meditation. They can help reduce stress, improve blood circulation, and promote a sense of calm and balance, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy menstrual cycle.
TCM offers a holistic approach that can benefit a wide range of people! There is no one way to incorporate TCM into your life. The individualized approach makes it perfect for people looking to complement conventional medical treatments or convert to a more natural and holistic approach to their health.
Now we know TCM is for everyone, but we don’t know exactly how it supports the menstrual cycle. There are many ways TCM supports menstrual and reproductive health. Below we collect five.
TCM aims to restore balance to the body, which can help regulate menstrual cycles that are irregular or absent.
Acupuncture and herbal remedies have been reported to reduce menstrual cramps and pain effectively.
TCM practices, including herbal formulations and dietary therapy, target hormonal imbalances that lead to PMS and irregular periods.
Techniques like acupuncture, qi gong, and tai chi can help manage stress, which can, in turn, positively impact the menstrual cycle.
TCM recognizes the mind-body connection and aims to address emotional imbalances that may manifest as menstrual irregularities.
There is abundant benefit from incorporating TCM into your menstrual care! And by tracking your cycle in the Orchyd App, you identify where you need additional support.
You can note symptoms, moods, flow, and more. The more you input, the more accurate the predictions and the more you know about your cycle. With the automatic cycle health report produced at the end of each cycle, you clearly understand what needs more attention.
The Orchyd app gives you the agency to take action and begin incorporating supportive structures, like TCM, to better take care of your menstrual and reproductive health.
While TCM can benefit many people, there are certain cases where caution should be exercised.
The scientific exploration of TCM is ongoing, and while some practices have gained recognition, others require further research to establish their efficacy. Acupuncture, for instance, has shown promising results in managing menstrual pain and improving overall well-being. Some TCM herbs have also been studied for their potential to regulate hormones and alleviate menstrual symptoms. However, it's important to note that TCM is deeply rooted in a holistic philosophy that may not always align with Western scientific paradigms.
Ear seeds carry a deep legacy in TCM as a wellness tool to reduce stress, relieve pain, restore hormonal balance, and more. Don’t have time to come in for an acupuncture treatment? Ear seeds are an amazing way to get the same benefits at home. Place these tiny adhesive beads on various acupressure points to stimulate relief and promote overall wellness. Remove ear seeds after 3-5 days and reapply weekly.
Your calm in the chaos. This adaptogenic blend helps relieve stress over the long term while keeping you calm and energized. Daily Calm helps you manage the flow of daily life with organic ashwagandha, organic tulsi, and organic mimosa tree. This supplement is doctor-formulated, third-party tested, and made in the USA.

]]>The Orchyd Menstrual Cup comes in three different sizes to accommodate varying anatomies and flow intensity.
Size 1: This size is typically recommended for menstruators under 18 years old who have not given birth vaginally and have a low cervix. It has a smaller diameter and capacity, making it suitable for those with a light to normal flow or a more petite build.
Size 2: Designed for those who are 18 years and older and have a low cervix. This cup has a slightly larger diameter and capacity. It is better suited for menstruators with light to normal flow. Size 2 is perfect for first-time users.
Size 3: This size is suitable for menstruators who have experienced vaginal birth or have a high cervix. This is the largest cup and is ideal for a normal to heavy flow.
When selecting the right size, it's crucial to consider both age and childbirth history, as well as individual flow patterns. A cup that fits correctly will be virtually unnoticeable, allowing for hassle-free movement and lasting up to 12 hours of protection.
As you track your flow in the Orchyd App, you will discover what is normal for you when it comes to flow. Many menstruators invest in two sizes of menstrual cups to accommodate a heavy flow in the beginning and a lighter flow at the end of the menstrual phase. If you have any questions about what size is best for you, Orchyd MD™ is available for personalized advice.
Before using your cup for the first time and between each use during your cycle, follow these steps to clean it effectively:
Remember to clean the cup twice daily during your cycle and empty it every 8-12 hours. Avoid harsh chemicals, scented soaps, or abrasive cleaning materials, as they may cause irritation.
Review the steps above before inserting the Orchyd Menstrual Cup and clean your cup.
You have to fold the menstrual cup to insert it. There are two popular folding techniques you can use:
The C-Fold: Press the rim of the cup down with one finger to form a "C" shape. This folding method creates a compact shape, making it easier to insert. The c-fold is great for beginners.
The Punchdown Fold: Gently press the rim of the cup down and inward, creating a triangular shape. This fold reduces the size of the cup's leading point, making insertion more manageable for some individuals. The punchdown method is for more experienced cup users but may be easier to insert for some menstruators.
Choose the folding method that feels most comfortable for you and experiment to find the one that works best with your anatomy.
Find a comfortable position, such as squatting, sitting on the toilet, one leg propped, or in the show, to aid in easy insertion. Hold the folded cup firmly between your fingers and guide it into your vaginal canal at a 45-degree angle. Aim towards your tailbone, not directly upward.
Once the Orchyd Menstrual Cup is inside your vagina, it needs to open up to create a proper seal and prevent leaks. You can use one of these techniques to help it open:
Give the cup a gentle tug to ensure it is sitting comfortably and will not shift during physical activities.
Remember that practice makes perfect when using a menstrual cup for the first time. Don't get discouraged if it takes a few tries to get the insertion process right. With patience and experience, using the Orchyd Menstrual Cup will become more intuitive.
The duration you can wear a menstrual cup varies depending on your flow and the cup size. On average, you can safely wear the Orchyd Menstrual Cup for 8 to 12 hours. However, this timeframe is not set in stone and may differ from person to person. If your flow is heavy, you may need to empty it more frequently, while those with a lighter flow can go the full 12 hours.
In the Orchyd App, you can use the in-app timer, SafeFlow™, to track your menstrual cup and receive reminders to take it out. SafeFlow™ was developed with OB-GYNs and suggests a doctor-approved length of time per product. You can adjust the timer depending on your flow.
Remember, wearing the cup too long may increase the risk of leaks. It's essential to listen to your body and adapt your routine accordingly. If your cup is filling up quickly, consider emptying it more often.
Compared to tampons, menstrual cups carry a lower risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) due to their non-absorbent design. However, it's crucial to maintain proper hygiene and adhere to recommended wear times to minimize any potential risks. Regular cleaning, sterilization, and inspecting the cup for wear are essential.
Before using the Orchyd Menstrual Cup, take some time to familiarize yourself with your body. Knowing the location of your cervix and understanding the depth of your vaginal canal can help you find the most comfortable and secure position for the cup.
A water-based lubricant can ease insertion, especially if you experience discomfort. Apply a small amount of lube to the rim of the cup before folding and inserting it.
If you experience leaks, it might be due to improper positioning or an inadequate seal. Adjust the cup's position, ensuring it's fully open and has created a secure seal against the vaginal walls.
]]>CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a natural compound derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD is non-psychoactive, unlike its well-known counterpart THC, meaning it does not induce a "high" sensation. CBD interacts with the human body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes such as pain perception, mood, immune response, and inflammation. By influencing the ECS, CBD has shown the potential to offer a range of health benefits, making it a popular natural remedy for various ailments, including menstrual health issues.
Here is the cheat sheet we promised you. So the next time you’re scratching your head trying to pull forth the memory that tells you the difference between CBD and Marijuana, we got you.
The legal status of CBD varies depending on the country and its specific regulations. In many parts of the world, CBD extracted from industrial hemp with less than 0.3% THC is considered legal, thanks to the passage of the 2018 United States Farm Bill. However, it's important to note that some countries still have strict regulations or outright bans on all forms of cannabis-derived products.
The answer is short and obvious, but CBD gummies are a delicious form of cannabidiol-infused edibles. CBD gummies come in various flavors, shapes, and dosages, making them easy to add to your regular supplement lineup.
Making CBD gummies involves a straightforward process that begins with extracting CBD oil from industrial hemp plants using a CO2 extraction method. This method ensures the CBD remains pure and free from harmful solvents or contaminants. After obtaining the CBD oil, it is carefully measured to achieve precise dosages for each gummy.
The CBD oil is then combined with other ingredients to create the gummy mixture. Common ingredients include gelatin or a vegan alternative like pectin, sweeteners (such as cane sugar or agave syrup), flavorings, and colors. The mixture is heated, blended, and poured into molds to form the gummy shapes. Once set, the gummies are packaged and ready for your enjoyment.
You may be wondering why choose gummies? CBD comes in so many vehicles, from tinctures to salves. Why is the gummy format so ideal? Besides being the cutest way to take CBD, we list the top reasons below.
CBD gummies offer a discreet way to consume CBD, resembling regular gummy candies. They can be taken discreetly in public, allowing people to experience the benefits of CBD without drawing unwanted attention.
Each CBD gummy typically contains a predetermined dosage, making it easy to track and control CBD intake. This is especially beneficial when using CBD to manage menstrual symptoms, as consistent dosing is important for effective relief.
CBD gummies are ingested and metabolized more slowly than other CBD delivery methods like vaping or tinctures. As a result, the effects of CBD may last longer, providing prolonged relief from menstrual discomfort.
CBD gummies are ideal for individuals who prefer not to inhale CBD or are uncomfortable with vaping. They provide a safe and efficient way to experience the potential benefits of CBD without any lung irritation.
Finally, CBD gummies come in a variety of delicious flavors! You receive the benefits of CBD and get a small treat at the same time.
CBD gummies are a great complement to menstrual health! Below are the main symptoms CBD can provide relief for.

]]>Saffron, also known as Crocus sativus, is a treasured spice derived from the delicate stigmas of the saffron crocus flower. With its origins in Southwest Asia, this exotic spice has been used for centuries not only as a culinary delight but also for its numerous medicinal properties. The vibrant crimson hue and unique aroma make saffron a highly sought-after spice in various cuisines and traditional medicinal practices.
Before we get into the medicinal benefits of saffron, let’s start it off on a fun note. Below we have collected three cute facts about saffron.
The harvesting of saffron is an intricate and time-consuming process. Each flower yields only three delicate crimson stigmas, which are handpicked with utmost care. It takes an astonishing 75,000 blossoms to produce a single pound of saffron, making it one of the most expensive spices in the world.
Alongside its association with menstrual health, saffron has also been celebrated for its aphrodisiac qualities. Ancient civilizations believed saffron to enhance libido and sexual vitality, adding to its mystique and allure.
Saffron's vivid golden-red hue not only enhances the flavor of dishes but also serves as a natural coloring agent. In addition to food, saffron has been historically used to dye textiles and create vibrant hues in traditional clothing and tapestries.
Let’s get into it! Rich in active compounds like crocin, safranal, and kaempferol, saffron possesses unique properties that positively impact overall well-being. Here is a list of some of the medicinal benefits of saffron. Hold tight for a more focused look at how saffron specifically positively impacts menstrual health below!
Look at that resume! Saffron is a girl boss! She can do it all and more. So, let’s look at how saffron can be used to improve menstrual health.
It sure is! The active compounds in saffron, such as crocin and safranal, have been studied for their potential benefits in relieving menstrual symptoms. These compounds are believed to have mood-enhancing, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help alleviate period-related discomfort and mood swings.
When used in culinary amounts or taken as a supplement at the recommended dosage, saffron is unlikely to cause any adverse effects. Research suggests that an approximate daily dosage of 30 milligrams is sufficient to effectively address menstrual issues without posing any risk. In fact, for centuries, saffron has traditionally been used for menstrual health and other reproductive-related concerns.
As with any dietary supplement or remedy, individual responses may vary. It is essential to consider your unique health conditions and consult with your healthcare provider or chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™ before incorporating saffron into your diet.
Of course, if you are allergic to saffron, this is not the course for you. Allergic reactions to saffron can range from mild skin irritation to more severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis.
So, exercise caution and chat with a doctor before diving in. In most cases, when used responsibly and within the recommended dosage, saffron can be a safe and potentially beneficial option for managing menstrual discomfort and promoting well-being during menstruation.
Saffron has the potential to be your star player when it comes to menstrual health. It covers the big boys: mood, cravings, and cramps. If you track your symptoms in the Orchyd app, you will know exactly when to add a little saffron to your life.
One of the significant challenges menstruators face during menstruation is fluctuating mood. Saffron comes to the rescue as a natural mood enhancer. The spice has been studied for its ability to increase serotonin levels in the brain, the neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood and emotions. By promoting serotonin production, saffron can help reduce feelings of irritability, anxiety, and sadness commonly experienced during the menstrual cycle. This mood-lifting effect can promote a more positive and emotionally balanced menstrual cycle.
Cravings are the sneaky symptom! Saffron can be a valuable ally in managing these cravings. Studies have suggested that saffron can suppress appetite and reduce snacking urges. By curbing these cravings, saffron supports healthier eating habits during menstruation, promoting overall well-being and potentially aiding in weight management.
Menstrual cramps can range from mild to downright debilitating. Saffron's anti-inflammatory properties may offer relief from painful cramps. The active compounds in saffron have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in studies. By reducing inflammation in the reproductive organs, saffron can alleviate menstrual cramps and provide a soothing effect on the lower abdomen. This natural remedy offers a welcome alternative to over-the-counter pain relievers, promoting a more holistic approach to menstrual health.

]]>Nootropics, commonly known as "smart drugs" or "cognitive enhancers," are a class of substances that aim to improve cognitive functions, memory, focus, and overall brain health. While initially developed to aid individuals with neurological disorders, nootropics have gained popularity among healthy individuals seeking cognitive enhancement. These compounds work by modulating neurotransmitters, promoting neuroplasticity, and enhancing cerebral blood flow, improving mental clarity and performance.
Nootropics target various brain functions to improve cognitive abilities, memory, focus, and overall mental clarity. These substances act on neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine, influencing their levels and interactions within the brain. By modulating neurotransmitters, nootropics can enhance communication between brain cells, improving cognitive performance. Some nootropics also promote neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural connections, contributing to enhanced learning and memory retention. While the specific mechanisms vary depending on the type of nootropic, the overall goal is to optimize brain function and support mental well-being.
Nootropics offer general health benefits that target brain function and mental well-being, contributing to overall cognitive enhancement and improved quality of life. Below are some added benefits Nootropics bring to your life.
They sure can! Along with everything we listed above, nootropics help tackle focus, moodiness, anxiety, insomnia, brain fog, and energy. Read below for the details.
Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can lead to difficulties maintaining focus and concentration. Substances like L-theanine and Alpha-GPC are particularly effective in improving cognitive function and enhancing attention span.
L-theanine, commonly found in green tea, promotes a state of relaxed focus by increasing alpha brain wave activity. Alpha-GPC, a precursor to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter associated with memory and focus, aids in sharpening mental clarity. By incorporating these nootropics, menstruators may experience enhanced focus and productivity.
Nootropics with mood-regulating properties can help provide emotional balance. Adaptogenic herbs like Rhodiola Rosea and Ashwagandha play a crucial role. They help the body adapt to stress and regulate cortisol levels, which in turn stabilizes mood and promotes emotional balance.
Nootropics such as Aniracetam and Phenibut have been suggested to possess anxiolytic properties, effectively reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of calmness. By modulating certain neurotransmitters associated with anxiety, these nootropics can help alleviate the anxious feelings that often pop up during PMS.
Insomnia and sleep are common PMS symptoms. Nootropics like Magnesium and L-theanine can support better sleep quality. Magnesium relaxes muscles and promotes relaxation, while L-theanine induces calmness without causing sedation. Improved sleep leads to improved overall well-being!
Nootropics like Bacopa monnieri and Huperzine-A have shown the potential to enhance memory and learning abilities. Bacopa monnieri is believed to promote neuroplasticity, aiding in forming new neural connections and improving memory retention. Huperzine-A, on the other hand, inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine, leading to improved memory function. By incorporating these nootropics, women may experience improved cognitive performance despite hormonal fluctuations.
Fatigue is common during PMS, often impacting daily activities and productivity. Nootropics like Rhodiola Rosea and Panax ginseng are known for their energy-boosting effects. These adaptogenic herbs enhance the body's ability to handle stress and promote physical endurance, leading to increased energy levels and reduced feelings of fatigue during the premenstrual phase.
While nootropics offer so many benefits, it is essential to approach usage cautiously. As with any supplement or medication, there are certain considerations and risks associated with nootropics. Here are some cautions to be mindful of:
Remember that nootropics are not a one-size-fits-all solution; what works for one person may not work for another. Making informed decisions and considering individual health factors before use is crucial. We recommend seeking guidance from your doctor or a healthcare professional through Orchyd MD™ to minimize the risks.
Adding nootropics to your life requires a mindful approach to ensure safety and effectiveness. Follow this step-by-step guide:
Begin with a low dose of a single nootropic to gauge individual response and tolerance.
Monitor changes in cognitive function, mood, and overall well-being.
Gradually adjust the dosage or try different nootropics based on your goals and responses.
Pay attention to any adverse reactions and discontinue if necessary. Always prioritize safety and informed choices.

]]>Patches, or transdermal patches, are a unique, innovative approach to health care. Patches work on the principle of transdermal drug delivery, allowing active ingredients to be absorbed through the skin and directly into the bloodstream. The patches are designed with a backing layer, an adhesive, and a reservoir containing a carefully curated blend of natural ingredients, vitamins, and supplements.
Upon application to the skin, the patch's adhesive gently adheres to the epidermis, creating a continuous and steady release of the active components over a designated period. This sustained delivery ensures that the body receives a controlled dosage of the essential elements, maximizing their potential benefits. Unlike oral supplements or medications that may undergo digestion and metabolic processes before entering the bloodstream, transdermal patches bypass these stages, leading to improved bioavailability and overall effectiveness.
Good question! Why opt for a patch when you can take a pill? Answers below.
First, convenience stands as a major advantage. Patches are discreet, easy to apply and remove, and eliminate the need to swallow pills or mix powders into beverages. Moreover, they can be worn discreetly under clothing, providing a hassle-free solution for those with busy lifestyles.
Second, some patch companies, like The Good Patch in the Orchyd Marketplace™, take a more natural and holistic approach to wellness. The Good Patch carefully selects ingredients, opting for plant-based components and essential nutrients to target specific health concerns. Whether it's stress relief, sleep enhancement, energy boost, or other well-being objectives, their patches are designed to offer an alternative option to individuals seeking a more natural path to wellness.
Finally, the controlled and gradual release of active ingredients by transdermal patches ensures a sustained impact on the body. This consistency prevents sudden spikes or crashes in the bloodstream, promoting a stable and balanced experience for the wearer. It can be especially beneficial for individuals who struggle with compliance when taking traditional supplements at specific daily intervals.
Transdermal patches are generally considered safe for most individuals when used as directed. If you are shopping in the marketplace, The Good Patch patches are gluten-free, dermatologically tested, paraben free, made without latex, cruelty-free, and vegan.
That said, being mindful of individual allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients is essential. Before using any new wellness product, including transdermal patches, it is advisable to read the ingredients list carefully and consult with your doctor or a healthcare professional through Orchyd MD™. Pregnant or nursing individuals and those with underlying medical conditions should also consult with a healthcare provider.
The goal of the product determines the ingredients in a patch. Below are the top five best sellers from The Good Patch, available in the Orchyd Marketplace™, to be delivered for free right to your door.

Ingredients
The answer depends on the patch. One benefit of The Good Patch products is you can wear them between eight to 12 hours, but they can be worn however long you need. You can comfortably go about your day, and when you are ready, just peel the patch off.
Proper placement of transdermal patches is vital for their effectiveness. The patches should be applied to clean, dry skin free from oils, lotions, or other skincare products. Place the patch on an area of the skin with minimal hair to ensure proper adhesion.
Common locations for patch placement include the inside of the wrist, the back of the shoulder, the lower abdomen, or the top of the foot. Users can rotate the placement area to avoid potential skin irritation from prolonged use in the same spot.
Individual experiences may vary based on the patch's purpose and one's unique physiology. Some users may notice immediate effects, while others might experience more subtle improvements over time. Patience and regular use are key to maximizing the benefits of the patches. You can expect to feel the benefits about 20 minutes after application when using The Good Patch.
If you are used to taking pills, gummies, or powders, it can be hard to know when a patch is working.
The key to determining a patch's efficacy is to be mindful of any changes in the targeted area of improvement and to keep track of how you feel throughout regular patch usage. Some individuals may experience more immediate results, while others may notice improvements gradually as the body absorbs the active ingredients.
You can have confidence when applying The Good Patch. All of their patches endure extensive 3rd party testing to guarantee that what you see is what you get. The ingredients are “tried-and-true” and recognizable. There is a reason they have nearly 4,000 5-star testimonials!
So, that is how transdermal patches work! Hopefully, you have the confidence to start benefitting from this innovative form of care.

]]>CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a natural compound in the Cannabis sativa plant. It belongs to a group of compounds known as cannabinoids. Unlike its counterpart THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not produce psychoactive effects or the feeling of being "high." This makes it a popular option for those seeking the potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis without the mind-altering consequences.
CBD can be extracted from hemp or marijuana plants, although it is more commonly sourced from industrial hemp due to its lower THC content. It is available in various forms, including oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, topicals, and more. These products are often marketed as dietary supplements or used in medicinal applications.
CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors and neurotransmitters involved in regulating various physiological functions. CBD indirectly influences ECS receptors, particularly CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are found throughout the body.
By interacting with these receptors, CBD can modulate the release of neurotransmitters, reduce inflammation, and impact various bodily processes. CBD also affects other non-cannabinoid receptors, such as serotonin and vanilloid receptors, which affect mood regulation and pain perception. Research into CBD's potential benefits is ongoing, but it has shown promise in several areas.
Below are some ways CBD can offer relief during PMS:
CBD's analgesic properties help alleviate menstrual cramps and pelvic pain by reducing pain sensation and inflammation.
CBD helps promote a sense of calmness and reduces anxiety, mood swings, and irritability by interacting with serotonin receptors in the brain.
CBD regulates hormonal fluctuations by interacting with the endocrine system. It promotes hormonal balance and potentially alleviates symptoms such as bloating, breast tenderness, and acne.
CBD's anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects help relieve headaches or migraines.
CBD can aid in improving sleep quality by reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.
Anti-inflammatory properties in CBD help alleviate gastrointestinal issues like bloating, constipation, and nausea.
CBD interacts with receptors in the ECS, alleviating overall stress and tension.
Tracking your menstrual cycle with the Orchyd app provides insight into when to take CBD for optimal relief. By noting your flow and recording symptoms like pain, mood swings, and bloating, you identify patterns and anticipate when symptoms will likely occur. This knowledge allows you to take CBD a few days before your expected symptoms arise, maximizing the benefits. By syncing CBD with your cycle, you address symptoms more effectively and have an overall better cycle.
When selecting, purchasing, and taking CBD, there are several factors to consider to ensure safety, quality, and effectiveness:
Look for CBD products derived from organically grown hemp plants to minimize the risk of exposure to pesticides and contaminants. Third-party lab testing is essential to verify the product's potency and purity.
Check the THC content in CBD products, especially if you want to avoid any psychoactive effects. In most countries, CBD products derived from hemp should contain less than 0.3% THC, ensuring they are non-intoxicating.
Choose products made using safe and reliable extraction methods such as CO2 extraction, which ensures a clean and pure CBD extract.
Consider your preferences and desired effects when selecting a product form, such as oils, capsules, edibles, or topicals. Different delivery methods have varying onset times and durations, affecting how quickly and how long the CBD takes effect.
Start with a low CBD dosage and gradually increase it as needed. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to determine an appropriate dosage for your specific needs.
Look for products with clear and accurate labeling, including CBD concentration, serving sizes, and any additional ingredients. Avoid products with vague or misleading claims.
Understand the legal status of CBD in your region. CBD laws can vary, so ensure compliance with local regulations to avoid legal issues.
Consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you take other medications, as CBD can interact with certain drugs.
Be aware of potential side effects such as dry mouth, drowsiness, or changes in appetite. If you experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
If you have any CBD questions, consult your doctor or use Orchyd MD™ in the Orchyd app. Orchyd MD™ connects users to a network of healthcare providers to chat privately and receive medical advice. Developed with the guidance of expert herbalists and doctors, Xula’s herbal formulas provide comprehensive, full-body womb and cycle support by promoting easeful periods, PMS, menopause, hormonal balance, and overall wellness.
Rigorously tested by people with wombs, they understand that restoring balance is essential to feeling better day-to-day, physically and mentally. Each of their 100% clean, organic, and triple-lab tested formulations does exactly that.
Xula is founded by Karina Primelle. From a young age, Karina’s fascination with plants and herbs led her to the discovery of the medicinal properties of cannabis. At the age of 13, she stumbled upon an alcohol-based rub containing cannabis that provided genuine relief for her back pain. This experience ignited her interest in exploring the science behind this powerful plant.
As she delved deeper into the subject, Karina found that although there was ample research on the relationship between cannabis and female reproductive health, there was a significant gap in knowledge when it came to using cannabis for other health issues.
As someone who personally suffered from debilitating period pain, Karina was determined to find a solution that combined the cannabinoids she knew to be beneficial with herbs that had historically been used to treat menstrual cramps. In collaboration with herbalists, she developed a tincture that worked wonders for her pain - not realizing at the time that she had endometriosis.
Her desire to share this formula with others led Karina to develop a wider range of cannabis-based products, culminating in the launch of Xula Herbs. For her, Xula is an expression of her love for plant medicines and her own journey towards feeling good in her own body and having a better cycle.
Karina hopes that the products from Xula Herbs can provide the same relief and support that they have given her on her healing journey. She expresses her gratitude for considering Xula Herbs as a part of one's wellness routine.
Xula is a proud member of the anti-racist Floret Coalition. The Floret Coalition is a collective of small businesses in the cannabis and cannabis-adjacent space supporting and funding equity-oriented actions via monthly donations and social campaigns. Together, we raise funds and awareness for organizations prioritizing the needs of Black, Latine, and Indigenous communities. These same communities bear the deepest scars of the misguided "war on drugs." Since 2020, their 100+ members collectively donated $270k to organizations serving Black, Latine, and Indigenous communities.
]]>Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the normal bacteria that reside in the vagina. Normally, the vagina contains a delicate balance of different types of bacteria, including both good and harmful bacteria. However, in the case of BV, the harmful bacteria outnumber the beneficial bacteria leading to overgrowth and disruption of the vaginal ecosystem.
BV is quite common and affects a significant number of people. It is estimated that about 30% of people with vaginas in their reproductive years' experience BV at some point. It is more prevalent in people of childbearing age, particularly those who are sexually active. While BV can occur in people who have never had sexual intercourse, certain factors increase the risk, such as having multiple sexual partners, douching, and using intrauterine devices (IUDs) for contraception.
The symptoms of BV can vary from person to person. For some, they may experience no symptoms. However, common signs and symptoms include:
BV often causes a watery discharge that may be gray or white. The discharge may have a fishy odor, particularly after sexual intercourse or during menstruation.
A strong, unpleasant odor is a symptom of BV. The odor is usually more noticeable after sexual activity or during menstruation.
BV can cause itching and irritation in the vaginal area, leading to discomfort.
A burning sensation during urination.
It is important to note that these symptoms can be similar to other vaginal infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis.
Orchyd MD™, our telemedicine feature in the Orchyd app, is here to help you. Users can connect with healthcare providers to receive medical advice and suggestions for the next steps on how to treat BV. You can discuss symptoms, share information, and receive professional advice through secure chat consultation. Orchyd MD™ costs $29 for one visit, and no insurance is needed. Compared to the average co-pay, which can cost anywhere from $35 to $70, Orchyd MD™ is affordable and saves time.
Instead of browsing the internet and self-diagnosing, you can privately chat with a certified healthcare professional and receive clarity on how your body is doing and the next steps you need to take to heal.
Chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™ or make an appointment with your regular provider if you experience any of the following:
If you notice an unusual odor from your vaginal discharge accompanied by discomfort or irritation
If you have previously experienced vaginal infections but find that your current discharge appears different or unusual
If you have recently engaged in sexual activity with a new partner or multiple partners, it is important to note that symptoms of STIs can sometimes overlap with those of BV.
If you suspected a yeast infection and attempted self-treatment but still experience persistent symptoms.
You can receive proper diagnosis and guidance by seeking medical attention in these situations, ensuring effective management of your symptoms, and addressing any potential underlying issues.
The exact cause of BV is not fully understood, but certain factors contribute to its development.
BV occurs when there is an imbalance in the natural levels of bacteria in the vagina, known as vaginal flora. The vaginal flora consists of both "good" and "bad" bacteria, with the "good" bacteria, lactobacilli, playing a crucial role in maintaining vaginal health. Normally, the presence of lactobacilli outweighs the "bad" bacteria, known as anaerobes. However, an overgrowth of anaerobes disrupts the balance of the vaginal flora, leading to the development of BV.
Engaging in sexual activity, especially with multiple partners, increases the risk of BV. However, BV can also occur in people who have never had sexual intercourse.
Vaginal douching, which involves rinsing the vagina with water or other solutions, can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and increase the likelihood of BV.
People who use IUDs for contraception may have a slightly higher risk of developing BV.
BV can be effectively treated with various treatment options, including:
The primary treatment for BV involves the use of antibiotics. Oral antibiotics like metronidazole or clindamycin and topical antibiotics in the form of vaginal gels or creams are commonly prescribed. These medications help restore the balance of bacteria in the vagina by reducing the overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can be taken orally or inserted vaginally to help replenish the healthy bacteria in the vagina. They can help restore the natural balance of the vaginal flora and reduce the risk of recurrent BV.
If left untreated, BV can lead to various complications, including:
BV can make the vaginal tissues more susceptible to other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV.
BV can increase the risk of developing PID, an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. PID can cause severe pelvic pain, infertility, and other complications.
Pregnant people with BV have a higher risk of preterm birth (giving birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy), premature rupture of membranes (the amniotic sac breaking before labor), and postpartum infections.
BV can increase the risk of postoperative infections after gynecological procedures such as hysterectomy or abortion.
Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment of BV can help prevent these complications. If you suspect you have BV, chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™ or make an appointment with your regular provider.
While it is not always possible to prevent BV, there are specific measures that can help reduce the risk of developing it:
Wash the genital area with mild soap and water, and avoid harsh or scented products that can disrupt the vaginal flora.
Douching can disturb the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, so it is best to avoid this practice.
Practicing safe sex by using condoms can help prevent the transfer of bacteria and reduce the risk of BV.
Wearing breathable cotton underwear and avoiding tight-fitting clothing can help prevent excess moisture buildup, which can contribute to bacterial overgrowth.
Change tampons or pads regularly during menstruation. SafeFlow™, in the Orchyd app, reminds you when to take out or exchange your products, helping to avoid infection and overflow. Each product has a suggested time limit determined by a team of OB-GYNs, helping keep you safe throughout your flow. In addition, consider using unscented and hypoallergenic products, like the Orchyd Menstrual Cup, to minimize irritation.
Now you know everything you need to know about BV; what it is, what to look out for, when to talk to a doctor, and how to take preventative measures. You are more fully equipped to monitor your body and understand what is happening. And if you still feel unsure, you have Orchyd MD™ in your pocket for certified advice.
]]>Yes, the tag “FDA-approved” sounds official and as if it guarantees that your menstrual cup is the safest on the market, but the claim is entirely false.
The language matters here. When it comes to menstrual cups, understanding the difference between FDA registration and FDA approval is crucial. Menstrual cups are considered medical devices and are monitored by the FDA (the U.S. Food and Drug Administration), which plays a significant role in regulating the safety and efficacy of menstrual cups.
Menstrual cups are classified as class II medical devices, meaning they only require FDA registration. Menstrual cup brands that boldly claim “FDA-approved” are misleading and inaccurate. The FDA expresses that “any representation that creates an impression of official approval of a device because of complying with the premarket notification regulations is misleading and constitutes misbranding.” The fact is, only class III medical devices (think pacemakers, breast implants, defibrillators, cochlear implants, etc.) can be FDA-approved. So, in other words, menstrual cup brands cannot use "FDA-Approved" as a verifiable claim to promote their products.
The Orchyd Menstrual Cup is proudly FDA-registered, which means it complies with safety standards set by the FDA. We do not peddle false claims. Our cup is safe and effective.
Where you buy your menstrual cup can change whether the product is FDA-registered and the overall safety and quality. Many cups purchased from sites like Amazon use false claims to advertise their product. This is an unsafe and unethical practice.
When seeking a menstrual cup, it can be tempting to opt for the quick, cheap option, but by doing so, you risk your safety and the product's reliability. These sites that push unregistered menstrual cups are dangerous. Their products are often counterfeit with below-average safety standards that can pose health risks to the user.
The FDA-registered seal of approval ensures that the manufacturer complies with regulatory requirements, maintains quality control measures, and adheres to safety standards. Menstrual cups that are FDA-registered, like Orchyd, follow the health and safety protocols regulated by the FDA and do not use false messaging. FDA registration guarantees that what you are putting in your body is safe and actually works.
So, be mindful of where you buy your menstrual cup and look for FDA registration. For peace of mind, the FDA-registered Orchyd Menstrual Cup is available on the Orchyd Marketplace whenever you are ready.
The ingredients in menstrual cups also require close inspection and research. The FDA does not regulate the materials and ingredients used to make a product. They only regulate the end product, which in this case, is the menstrual cup, not the silicone used to create it. Therefore, any claim that a menstrual cup is made of FDA-approved silicone is false and should be steered clear of.
Medical-grade silicone is considered one of the safest forms of silicone. It is a hypoallergenic and non-toxic material that is safe for use inside the body. It is also known for its durability, flexibility, and non-reactive properties. Medical-grade menstrual cups, like the Orchyd cup, are latex-free, contain no toxins, cause less irritation or allergies, and are nonporous, meaning they resist bacterial growth.
When choosing a menstrual cup, selecting a cup with no dyes is also important. Dyes are often added to provide color variations, but they may introduce potential risks. Dyed cups can cause allergic reactions or irritations and risk chemicals leaching into the body. Dye-free cups eliminate these hazards.
The Orchyd cup is made of 100% medical-grade silicone and is crystal clear with no dyes so that you can manage your flow safely.
Despite claims made by some brands, menstrual cups cannot be FDA-approved. Menstrual cups fall under the category of class II medical devices and are only FDA-registered, not approved. The use of "FDA approved" as a promotional claim is misleading and considered misbranding by the FDA.
The Orchyd cup is FDA registered and adheres to the health and safety protocols that ensure the product's quality and legitimacy. The silicone is 100% medical grade, meaning it is safe, hypoallergenic, latex-free, toxin-free, nonporous, and resistant to bacterial growth. Being dye-free, the Orchyd menstrual cup further guarantees safety for all users.
The Orchyd cup sets the standard for health and safety in menstrual cups. Orchyd doesn’t need to embellish the cup with bold, false statements like FDA-approved silicone or FDA-approved cups. The cup stands on its own as a safe option for all menstruators.
]]>PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome. It is a commonly used term to describe a set of physical, behavioral, and emotional symptoms experienced in the days or weeks leading up to menstruation. PMS occurs due to hormonal fluctuations in the menstrual cycle. The exact cause is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve changes in serotonin levels, sensitivity to hormone changes, and neurotransmitter imbalances.
PMS symptoms can vary widely among individuals and may include physical discomfort, mood swings, irritability, fatigue, and changes in appetite. Proper self-care, lifestyle adjustments and medical interventions can help manage PMS symptoms effectively.
Here are the most common symptoms of PMS.
Not all menstruators experience all of these symptoms, and the severity and duration can vary. It is essential to track your symptoms using tools like the Orchyd app to learn more about your cycle patterns and better understand when a symptom and the severity are normal. With Orchyd keeping track, you can more easily consult with a healthcare professional or a doctor through Orchyd MD™ when something seems off.
PMS typically begins a few days to two weeks before the start of menstruation. The timing can vary among menstruators and may differ from one menstrual cycle to the next. Symptoms commonly start around the midpoint of the menstrual cycle, which is approximately 14 days before the start of the next period. However, some individuals may experience early onset PMS symptoms even before the midpoint. Others may notice symptoms closer to their period's onset. The Orchyd app will notify you for each phase of your cycle so you will always feel in sync with your body.
In general, tracking and monitoring your menstrual cycle is important to better understand when PMS symptoms emerge and prepare better.
PMS is believed to be caused by a combination of factors, with hormonal changes playing a significant role. Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels during the menstrual cycle are thought to contribute to the onset of symptoms.
After ovulation, estrogen levels decline while progesterone levels rise. During this time, the luteal phase, PMS symptoms tend to emerge. The decrease in estrogen and the increase in progesterone can affect various systems in the body, including the brain and nervous system.
These hormonal changes can influence neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin, which regulates mood. Fluctuations in serotonin levels are associated with the emotional symptoms of PMS, such as mood swings, irritability, and depression.
Moreover, some menstruators may be more sensitive to these hormonal fluctuations and experience stronger effects on their physical and emotional well-being. Genetic factors may also contribute to the development and severity of PMS symptoms.
While hormonal changes are a crucial factor, other influences, such as stress, lifestyle, and underlying medical conditions, can also impact the severity of PMS symptoms. Proper self-care, stress management, exercise, and dietary adjustments may help alleviate symptoms for some individuals. For severe cases, medical interventions like hormonal therapies or antidepressants may be considered.
If you suspect your symptoms may go beyond typical PMS, the possibility of PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) is worth considering. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS that can significantly impact your daily life. The symptoms of PMDD are similar to those of PMS but are generally more intense and disruptive. These symptoms can include severe mood swings, heightened anxiety or irritability, extreme fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Consulting with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management is essential. They can help differentiate between PMS and PMDD and suggest treatment options, such as medication, therapy, or lifestyle changes, to address your specific needs. So, be sure to consult with your physician or chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™. Appointments are available whenever you need one and cost less than the average co-pay; no insurance is necessary.
To effectively manage PMS consider the following strategies and remember that what works for you may not work for another. So, find a combination of strategies that best suits your needs and the symptoms you track.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Regular exercise, balanced meals, and sufficient sleep can help alleviate symptoms.
Monitor and track symptoms: Track your symptoms in the Orchyd app to identify patterns and anticipate their onset.
Stress management: Engage in relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to reduce stress levels.
Dietary adjustments: Limit caffeine, salt, and refined sugars while increasing intake of whole foods, fruits, and vegetables.
Supplements: Certain supplements like calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B6 may help relieve symptoms.
Medication: Consult a healthcare professional who may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe hormonal contraceptives or antidepressants for severe cases.
Emotional support: Seek support from loved ones, join support groups, or consider therapy to manage emotional symptoms.
Orchyd MD™ connects you directly to a doctor who can help support and manage PMS. Your doctor can provide a comprehensive evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and rule out any underlying conditions. Based on the severity of symptoms, they may recommend various treatment options, including hormonal contraceptives, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), or other mood stabilizers to regulate hormones and alleviate emotional symptoms. In some cases, diuretics or pain relievers may be suggested for specific physical symptoms.
Between Orchyd MD™ and Blossom™, your personal AI assistant, you can receive guidance on lifestyle modifications, including exercise routines, dietary changes, stress management techniques, and relaxation exercises. Regular follow-ups within Orchyd MD™ can help monitor progress, adjust treatment plans, and ensure the most effective management of PMS symptoms.
Like we offered above, birth control can assist with PMS. Hormonal contraceptives, such as combination oral contraceptives or hormonal patches, can help regulate hormone levels and alleviate PMS symptoms. These medications work by preventing ovulation and stabilizing hormone fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle. By providing a consistent hormone balance, birth control can reduce the severity of physical and emotional symptoms associated with PMS.
However, it's important to note that individual responses to birth control may vary, and it may take some trial and error to find the most suitable contraceptive method for managing PMS. Consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended to discuss the potential benefits and risks of using birth control for PMS management.
If you need to refill your birth control prescription, Orchyd MD™ is here to help. Just have your prescription and details on hand and start the chat when ready.
PMS is uncomfortable, but it is manageable with Orchyd by your side. You can track your symptoms, learn more about your cycle, get the support you need, and have an all-around easier flow.
]]>There are several reasons why some menstruators may experience more frequent bowel movements during their period. One reason is the release of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that play a role in inflammation and pain. Prostaglandins are released during menstruation and can cause the muscles of the intestines to contract more strongly, leading to increased bowel activity and more frequent trips to the bathroom.
Another factor is the close proximity of the uterus and the intestines. During menstruation, the uterus contracts to shed its lining. These contractions can stimulate the nearby intestines, leading to bowel movement urgency and more frequent pooping.
Additionally, some people may experience increased sensitivity in the gastrointestinal tract during their period. This heightened sensitivity can result in abdominal discomfort, cramps, and an increased urge to have a bowel movement.
While some menstruators may experience more frequent bowel movements, others may feel like they can't poop during their period. This can be attributed to a variety of factors. One common reason is the effect of hormonal changes on the gastrointestinal tract. The rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone levels can affect bowel movements differently for each person. Some individuals may experience slower bowel movements or constipation during this time, leading to a sensation of difficulty in passing stools.
Moreover, the release of prostaglandins during menstruation can cause the muscles of the intestines to contract more strongly. In some cases, this can lead to cramping and discomfort, making it challenging to relax the muscles required for a bowel movement.
Additionally, psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, or discomfort related to menstruation can contribute to the feeling of being unable to poop during the period.
Period poop can vary from person to person, but there are some common characteristics that many menstruators may experience. These include:
Stools may be looser or more watery than usual due to increased bowel activity and hormonal fluctuations.
Some menstruators may have more frequent bowel movements during their period compared to their regular bowel habits.
Cramps, bloating, and abdominal pain are common symptoms during menstruation and may be associated with period poops.
The need to have a bowel movement may feel more urgent and intense than usual.
Hormonal changes and increased bowel activity can lead to the production of more gas, resulting in bloating and flatulence.
Period poops can sometimes be accompanied by discomfort or pain. There are several factors that contribute to this.
Menstruation involves the release of chemicals called cytokines, which are involved in the inflammatory response. These cytokines can affect the gastrointestinal system, leading to increased sensitivity and pain during bowel movements.
Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can cause water retention and bloating. This can put pressure on the intestines and contribute to discomfort or pain during period poops. Excessive gas production can also exacerbate the discomfort.
Some menstruators may have pre-existing conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or endometriosis, which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms during menstruation. These conditions can further contribute to the pain or discomfort experienced during period poops.
If you are experiencing severe or persistent symptoms related to period poops, it may be a good idea to consult your doctor or chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™. If you are experiencing any of the following, please contact a doctor.
Intense pain: If you have severe abdominal pain or cramping that significantly interferes with your daily activities.
Persistent symptoms: If your period poops are consistently accompanied by severe diarrhea or constipation or persist beyond your menstrual phase.
Excessive bleeding: If you notice any signs of excessive bleeding or unusual changes in your menstrual flow.
Other concerning symptoms: If you experience weight loss, rectal bleeding, severe bloating, or changes in bowel habits unrelated to your menstrual cycle.
While it may not be possible to stop period poops completely, there are several strategies that can help alleviate the discomfort and manage the symptoms. Here are top tips!
In the Orchyd app, you can track your menstrual cycle and all the symptoms you experience, including period poops! Tracking your bowel movements can help identify any patterns or triggers and allow you to understand your body and manage your symptoms more effectively. In the Orchyd app, you can track: Nausea, Diarrhea, Cramps, Appetite changes, Bloating, Constipation, and Gassy. You can also customize your own symptoms if you want to learn more about your bowel movements and your cycle.
Drinking plenty of water can help soften the stools and prevent dehydration, which can contribute to constipation. Aim to drink at least 8–10 glasses of water per day. In the Orchyd app, you can track water intake by setting a goal and creating reminders so you never go a day dehydrated.
Consuming a fiber-rich diet can help regulate bowel movements and prevent both constipation and diarrhea. Include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes in your meals to increase fiber intake. However, be cautious with sudden dietary changes, as they may worsen symptoms for some individuals. Gradual adjustments may be more beneficial.
Stress can worsen digestive symptoms, including period poops. Engage in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga to reduce stress levels. Regular exercise can also help alleviate stress and promote healthy bowel movements. In the Orchyd app, you can track a huge range of moods, including Anxious, Irritated, Mood swings, Obsessive thoughts, Self-critical, and Stressed. The more you track, the more you understand how symptoms overlap and affect your overall well-being.
Over-the-counter medications such as anti-diarrheal medications or fiber supplements may provide temporary relief from period poops. However, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before using any medication to ensure it is suitable for your specific situation. You can easily chat with a doctor in the Orchyd app through Orchyd MD™, our telehealth feature that connects you to a real-life doctor anytime you need it. Visits cost less than the average co-pay, and doctors are available 24/7.
Applying a heating pad or taking a warm bath can help relax the muscles and alleviate the cramping associated with period poops.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can promote a healthy gut. Consuming probiotic-rich foods or taking probiotic supplements may help regulate bowel movements and improve digestive health. The Orchyd Marketplace™ has a plethora of solutions to your digestive woes. Check out Daily Digestion from WTHN, Happy Hormones from Xula, and the Detox Digestive Enzymes from Juna. New products are constantly being added to the Marketplace, so subscribe to the newsletter to stay in the know.
And again, consult a healthcare professional or chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™ for personalized advice.
There you go! Now you know too much about period poops, but you are stronger for it. So go forth and period poop fearlessly.
]]>A UTI stands for Urinary Tract Infection. It is an infection that can occur in any part of the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, kidneys, and ureters. However, UTIs are most commonly found in the lower urinary tract, specifically the bladder and urethra.
UTIs are typically caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract through the urethra and multiplying in the bladder. The most common type of bacteria that causes UTIs is E. coli, which normally resides in the digestive system.
UTIs can affect people of all ages and genders, but some groups are more prone due to certain factors. Here are some common groups of people who are more likely to get UTIs:
While these groups may be more prone to UTIs, anyone can develop a UTI.
UTI symptoms can vary depending on where the infection is and its severity. Here are some common symptoms associated with UTIs:
It's important to note that UTI symptoms may vary from person to person, and some individuals may not experience any symptoms at all, especially in the early stages of the infection. Additionally, UTI symptoms in older adults and children may differ from those experienced by younger adults.
If you’re concerned, use a cycle-tracking app like Orchyd to track your sexual activity and any symptoms you may experience.
Simply put–yes, you can get a UTI from sex. During sex, especially vaginal intercourse, bacteria from the genital and anal areas can be introduced into the urethra. The bacteria can then travel up the urethra and infect the bladder, causing a UTI.
Sex can lead to UTIs because the urethra is very close to the genital and anal area. This means bacteria can enter the urinary tract more easily during sexual activity. Here are some reasons why:
While sex can contribute to UTIs, it's important to note that not everyone who has sex will develop a UTI. Other factors, such as your hygiene and overall health, play a role in determining susceptibility to UTIs.
It is generally recommended to avoid sex while you have a UTI because it can potentially worsen the infection, cause discomfort, and may lead to further complications. Here are some reasons why it's best to refrain from sex when you have a UTI:
It's essential to give your body time to heal and finish the antibiotics prescribed by your healthcare provider to treat the UTI effectively. If you experience UTI symptoms and are currently being treated for a UTI, it's best to discuss the issue with your healthcare provider or an Orchyd MD™ doctor before having sex.
To reduce the risk of UTIs related to sex, you can take preventive measures, such as:
If you are experiencing symptoms of a UTI after sex or at any time, it's essential to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment. UTIs can be effectively treated with antibiotics, and early intervention can prevent complications and discomfort. Orchyd MD™ is available 24/7 and on-demand if you need any medical assistance.
After completing the prescribed treatment and once your symptoms have resolved, it should be safe to resume having sex. However, it's always a good idea to maintain good hygiene practices, urinate before and after sex, and communicate openly with your partner about any health concerns to minimize the risk of future UTIs.
While it's important to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis and treatment of a UTI, there are some at-home measures you can take to help alleviate discomfort and support your recovery. These measures can complement the prescribed treatment from your healthcare provider. Here are some best practices for at-home UTI care:
It's important to note that while these at-home measures can provide temporary relief and support your recovery, they do not replace medical treatment. UTIs require appropriate antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional to effectively eliminate the infection. If you suspect you have a UTI or are experiencing symptoms, it's crucial to consult with your healthcare provider or an Orchyd MD™ doctor for a proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plan. UTIs can lead to complications if left untreated, especially if the infection spreads to the kidneys.
If you’re unsure if you have a UTI, your healthcare provider can perform tests to confirm the presence of a UTI and prescribe appropriate antibiotics or other treatments to resolve the infection. Alternatively, if you don’t want to make the drive to the doctor’s office, try Stix UTI Tests. They are FDA-approved and over 99% effective.
]]>While having a drink or two may not usually affect you, for those of us who menstruate, alcohol can affect your cycle in ways you never expected. A bottle of wine has become the common comfort for PMS or period cramps, but could it actually be harming more than it is helping?
While alcohol can be a great way to liven up most social situations or even soothe you on a night at home, what is it actually doing to you? Alcohol isn’t digested, which means it goes directly into your bloodstream. How that affects you is primarily based on a few factors.
Height and Weight: If you are a heavier or taller person, you are likely to metabolize alcohol much slower than someone shorter or lighter than you. The alcohol doesn’t have to take as much time to absorb into your body when you’re lighter, so you’ll likely experience the effects of drinking much more quickly.
Body Composition: If you’re someone with a vagina and a womb, you’ll react differently to alcohol consumption than someone without. Alcohol will stay in the body longer as it takes more time to break down in the system of those who menstruate. If you’re ovulating or about to experience a period, you’re also more likely to get drunk quicker.
Alcohol also dehydrates the body, so you’re more likely to feel PMS symptoms or period pain more heavily if you drink a lot. Dehydration can intensify cramping as your body needs more water during your period to help pass blood and tissue. Dehydration makes the blood more viscous, causing harder cramping to help pass it.
If you’re someone who drinks often, though, and in higher quantities, alcohol can affect your cycle as a whole. In some cases, those who drank regularly were found to have more irregularities in their cycle, such as missed periods, irregular or missed ovulation, and even shorter or longer periods. Alcohol directly impacts hormones, so prolonged instances of binge drinking or heavy drinking can increase your estrogen levels.
Higher estrogen levels can even trick the individual into believing that alcohol is more pleasurable as the release of hormones light up the part of the brain that makes alcohol feel better. The increase in consumption of alcohol and the change in your hormones can cause irregular cycles and even problems with fertility if it gets bad enough. Because heavy drinking has been linked to skipped ovulation periods or disruptions in your cycle, it could affect the likelihood of you getting pregnant.
There isn’t much research into how it affects fertility, but it can change your health for the worse, and if your body isn’t working well, it can affect getting pregnant or staying pregnant. If you’re trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatments, it is highly recommended that you limit or remove alcohol from your diet altogether.
If you’re going to be drinking during your cycle, there are things you should and shouldn’t drink. Wine or beer might make you feel better while cramping, but dehydration isn’t always worth the comfort. Here are some tips to navigate the drink menu during that time of the month.
Water-based Drinks: If you’re going to drink, something mixed with water or a sparkling water beverage may be your best option. Sugary drinks aren’t going to quench you and combined with alcohol, you’re going to get dehydrated quickly. A sparkling water cocktail or even alcohol mixed with water can help hydrate you while you’re enjoying a drink. Water-based fruits may also be good for mixers like melons, pineapple, oranges, and strawberries.
Avoid Caffeinated Mixers: Caffeinated beverages aren’t going to be easy to avoid for most during your period, but it is best to avoid using them as mixers as they can make PMS or cramps worse.
Eat and Hydrate Well Before or During: Eat something good before drinking or even during to help stave off hangover symptoms. If you get in good protein, vitamins, and minerals before or during drinking, you can metabolize the alcohol better.
Birth control is a vital resource for those who are sexually active and need protection because it lowers the risk of getting pregnant as well as the severity of period symptoms. Even if it is uncomfortable, it is essential to get what you need and important to be able to talk with your doctor about your options.
Below are some things to keep in mind when talking to your doctor.
Your doctor is likely to have questions about your medical and sexual history when you ask for birth control, and you should be prepared with those answers. The most important thing is to be honest with your medical professional. Keeping information from your doctor means they can’t correctly assess what birth control may be the best fit for you. If they don’t know your medical history or any other things you might be experiencing, the birth control they prescribe could conflict with your medical conditions.
You should also be prepared to ask about any potential side effects, benefits, and the effectiveness of each birth control option they suggest. These questions will help you feel more empowered when talking through your options. Your doctor should be able to answer all of your questions effectively and help reassure you about any of your concerns.
Birth control comes in many forms, so you should be aware of what methods are available to you before you talk to your doctor. The more information you have going into the conversation the stronger you will feel about your decision. Below are the common types of birth control options.
These are what you typically think of when you think of birth control. Oral contraceptives can come in two forms and are either hormone-based or progestin-only. Both methods come with different possible side-effects but their effectiveness is generally the same.
Hormonal Birth Control: These pills are generally 91% effective if used correctly. They are a mixture of estrogen and progestin which work together to keep your body from producing eggs, thus lowering your risk of pregnancy and regulating your period.
Progestin-only Birth Control: Without the addition of estrogen, these mini-pills are about 91% effective. They may be recommended if your body doesn’t react well with the combination hormone birth control.
These pills need to be taken daily to ensure their effectiveness and should be used in combination with other contraceptive measures to make up for the 9% that isn’t effective.
Quite like oral contraceptives, the patch has a 91% effectiveness. The patch is made for those who can’t keep up with a daily pill and would prefer something a bit more low-maintenance. You’ll wear the patch all week and then put on the next one at the end of the week. You will have to take a week off from the patch so your body can regulate, but then once that week is over you return to usage as normal. So that’s three weeks on, one week off. Like hormonal birth control, it will keep your body from producing eggs.
This method has slightly higher effectiveness at about 94% and can last up to 3 months without the need to re-inject. You can administer it yourself or by your doctor. It is also recommended as a possible ward against ovarian cancer.
The implant is one of the highest on the list as far as effectiveness goes. It is over 99% effective and you don’t have to worry about getting it replaced for four years. It keeps your body from releasing eggs while also making the mucus in your body thicker so that the sperm won’t be able to reach the egg as easily. It can be a little nerve-wracking the first time as it needs to be inserted under the skin in your arm, but it isn’t as scary as it seems.
Progestin IUD’s can last anywhere from three to six years and have an effectiveness level the same as the implant. It is 99% effective which makes it ideal for those who don’t want to worry about keeping up with their birth control. Copper IUDs can lengthen the time between implantation and can last up to twelve years.
Your doctor is there to help you. Their goal is to help keep you healthy and safe. Your sense of comfort, the intimacy and knowledge you have of your body, and what you know you need are important for your doctor to hear. Keep in mind that, if you fear your doctor is judging you or not providing you with what you need, you have the right to ask for a new doctor.
People use birth control for plenty of reasons besides preventing pregnancy, like lightening periods, PMS relief, protection against cervical or ovarian cancers, and helping with anemia. As long as you come prepared, your doctor should be able to help you make the best-informed decision for your body and your needs.
]]>If that sweet, chocolatey goodness is all you can think of during that time of the month, you're in good company. In fact, about half of period-aged people in the U.S. report having intensified cravings for cacao a few days before through a few days after their periods, according to Psychology Today. During this time, the ebb and flow of estrogen and progesterone are likely the culprits for the cravings in many cases.
If it seems like you got crabbier and crampier when you crossed into the milestone of your thirties, it might not be in your head. According to Womenshealth.gov, women in their thirties are most likely to have PMS on average. Those headaches, bloating, and sessions of unexpected moodiness are very real.
Does it feel like you're always running to the store and spending your hard-earned cash on tampons, pads, and liners? Well, that's because it's estimated that women spend an average of $6,360 on feminine products during their reproductive years (ages 12 to 52), according to Swnsdigital.com.
Don't freak out just yet! This is a rare period disorder that doesn't affect many people, but if you're one of the people who's affected by vicarious menstruation, you could, indeed, bleed from your eyes. Ideally, you only bleed from your uterus during your period, but women who suffer from vicarious menstruation also bleed from other organs (like their eyes, for instance). Fortunately, you'd probably already be well-aware if you had this illness.
As if frigid winter days weren't bad enough all by themselves, cold weather could be making your period heavier and longer than usual. The winter season could also contribute to more significant pain levels than periods that take place when the summer sun is shining. The same is true for people who live in cold climates versus those who dwell in hotter areas.
In 1946, Walt Disney Productions produced the short flick The Story of Menstruation, in which a motherly narrator helps girls understand what's going on with their bodies during puberty. It's said that this risque flick was the first to use the word "vagina" in its screenplay.
Fluctuations of malnutrition and diseases in various parts of history have changed the average ages at which girls and other people got their first periods. During the Renaissance (the 1300s to 1600s), for example, the average age was reported to be 16. Today, thanks to better nutrition and healthcare, the average age is about 12.5. Of course, this is just an average, meaning some people start way earlier, while others start way later. There is no "normal" time to begin menstruating.
If you think about it, it sure does seem like those three tampon-free weeks are overshadowed by the pain and annoyance of your period week every single month. Those seven-or-so days just keep coming back, and over time, those weeks add up. Marie Claire reports that the average woman spends around a decade of her life on her period.
Traditional education taught us that women have all of their eggs as soon as they come out of the womb. According to Growing Generations, that may not be the case. It seems that some studies are suggesting that women may continue to produce new eggs throughout their lifetimes.
Before you skip the condom, bear in mind that sperm can live in your body for up to five days. That means if you miss the pill or skimp on the protection while you're menstruating, you could still wind up with a bun in the oven. Besides, STIs don't care if you're on your period, so you should never go without protection unless you know it's a safe situation.
Sure, sometimes it can feel like you're losing oceans of body fluid when your blood begins to exit your body. In reality, you're only losing an average of six to eight teaspoons throughout your entire cycle. While the majority of women and other people will lose less than 16 teaspoons of blood, some people may experience heavy menstruation cycles. For periods that are more than 16 teaspoons or last longer than seven days, you may want to speak to your doctor, as this could be a sign of something more serious, such as anemia.
According to a Swiss and German study summarized by Our Bodies Ourselves, the changes in hormone levels that women and other people experience throughout their monthly cycles do not affect attention, cognition, or working memory.
LOLA reports that a change in body weight (increase or decrease) of 20 percent could cause your hormone levels to change. With a change in hormone levels often comes a change in menstrual cycles.
Study findings conclude that sleeping with a nightlight by the bedside can shorten menstrual cycles. The study suggests that 100-watt light bulbs may be beneficial for treating infertility, contraception, and other endocrine interventions.
Check out the top euphemisms for periods across the globe. In Brazil, a person might say, "It's raining on the farm." On the other hand, the Japanese might come right out and say, "Blood festival."
These are just 15 of the many, many interesting facts about your period. We hope you learned something new.
]]>The last thing you need is to go to the bathroom to find your period hasn’t even arrived. What might feel like momentary relief can lead to deep-set panic as your delayed period ends up being straight-up late.
While you should always keep your doctor up to date on any changes in your cycle, it is essential to take a breath and reflect. The busy schedule, hectic workplace, and stress of everyday life could be bogging you down in more ways than you’re aware. Stress can do a lot to our bodies, like lead to acne, weight loss or gain, and even upset pH balance. But can stress actually delay your period?
Stress hormones can make the body feel like it is in a dangerous situation. The fight or flight response kicks in, and many symptoms manifest at the first sign of stress. These immediate onset symptoms include:
Much like with prey animals, stress will cause a chemical reaction that sets our bodies into fight or flight. Unfortunately, we often cannot choose between fight or flight and instead ignore the stress and go on with our day.
This reaction causes problems too. A build-up of stress hormones will wreak havoc on the body by disrupting natural functions. While it may not be immediate, it can cause moderate to severe health problems that will wear away at your system over time. This is why you’ve likely heard the phrase “stress is toxic,” because it can literally poison the body.
If your body is working with the danger signal firing day after day, you’re going to start to notice some issues. It may begin with disrupted sleep or blemishes when your skin is usually clear, but these things can evolve and get worse. You may notice effects like:
Because our nervous system works in tandem with the rest of our body, every other system is affected when the body is under stress. This means the endocrine, digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, muscular, and reproductive systems are all subject to stress-related problems and disruptions. So many of us live in a constant state of stress and don’t realize the toll it takes on our bodies.
Stress hormones can positively affect the immune system in short bursts, but your immune system is in trouble when it comes to the long-term impact. Stress hormones begin to chip away at your immunity over time, weakening it until your body’s response to fight back against illness is delayed.
If you are prone to candida overgrowth, a weakened immune system may mean that you start having outbreaks of yeast infections. This can be under the arms, breasts, and, most commonly, the vagina. Candida overgrowth can be incredibly painful, and the stress of this condition can further the problem. Your pH balance is delicate, and stress can upset it entirely.
Just like it weakens your immune system, your cycle is prone to upsets related to stress hormones. Stress can actively inhibit the menstrual cycle and cause a multitude of issues. These issues could be anything like:
Stress hormones imbalance other hormones, which can cause periods to be late, early, or skip a month altogether. This happens because your brain controls your period. It sends signals to your body, directing it when to release hormones and begin your cycle. Unfortunately, with stress, your body produces cortisol, which causes delays, irregularity, and lightness or heaviness of your period.
Stress has also proven to cause more painful periods. It can increase your clotting and cause painful cramping due to the irregularity in your hormones. Passing clots, in general, can be somewhat painful, and the rise in cortisol levels can affect the clotting of your menstrual blood.
If stress is causing delayed or missed periods often enough to be concerning, chat with a doctor through Orchyd MD™ inside the Orchyd app or consult with your primary care physician.
As stress hormones disrupt the menstrual cycle, they can also cause problems with fertility. Not only can stress reduce libido, but it can also affect ovulation. With cortisol levels affecting the release of estrogen and progesterone, your body can’t get the signal to release an egg. If you’re already struggling with fertility, stress is only going to make it worse.
Stress can also reduce or increase vaginal discharge. In addition to reduced libido, this can make sex uncomfortable if you get too dry. As we’ve talked about, your immune system goes hand in hand with your reproductive system, and you can develop a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis if your pH becomes imbalanced.
While it can feel impossible to improve your stress when you’re already at your breaking point, there are small things you can do to improve your stress levels.
Easier said than done, right? But studies show that having a consistent bedtime routine can help reduce stress levels significantly. Here are some recommendations for what to do for less stressful sleep:
This is also easier said than done, but even with a constantly packed schedule, you need to be able to carve out time for relaxation and recovery. This could mean taking a half-hour a day to enjoy a beverage of your choice and read a magazine. It could mean going for a jog or doing yoga to center yourself while boosting endorphins.
Another great way to regulate your hormones and drive down stress levels is to have a little bit of “me” time. Masturbation or having sex are great ways to release endorphins and reduce stress. The endorphins released from an orgasm are also known to help with period cramps, regulate sleep, and lower cortisol levels. So, find your favorite toy or grab your partner for some fun time between the sheets because it really is good for your health!

]]>Our time of the month is not usually when we think to break out the vibrator or showerhead, but maybe it should be. Not only can the big O relieve stress and help you understand your body, but multiple studies have shown that orgasms during your period can alleviate menstrual cramps as well. As if you needed another reason to masturbate, right?
This is because orgasms promote higher pain tolerance within the body and increased blood flow to the uterus (which helps with an easier menstruating experience for your body), thereby soothing uncomfortable cramps during your session. And when orgasms release all those pleasurable endorphins into your body, your brain is hyper-focused on that and not your cramp pains. The specific hormones released are dopamine and oxytocin, which balance out favorably with cortisol, the stress hormone, thereby helping your body reach an excellent hormonal equilibrium that will improve your mood and metabolic workings.
Another way masturbation helps our bodies in ways we don't think about is that it can help with digestion and bloat, thereby making workouts more effective with your new and improved metabolism. A study was done with a single woman who had never masturbated and struggled with stomach bloat, gas, and stubborn stomach fat. She reported that after purchasing and regularly using her first vibrator, she saw significantly less stomach bloat within weeks and had noticeably better digestion.
According to Toronto sex therapist Judith Golden, masturbating can help with our sense of well-being, self-confidence, sexuality, and ability to orgasm during intercourse with a partner. The more we explore our bodies, she claims, the more comfortable and in touch we become with ourselves, which helps us be more comfortable and open with our sexual partners. Golden also claims that masturbating can help with insomnia because blood pressure lowers, and the resulting flow of endorphins creates a relaxing feeling throughout the body, making a quick flick the ultimate nightcap.
If you need more reasons to start masturbating regularly, keep in mind the positive physical and mental processes it facilitates. Be it restlessness, PMS, cramp pain, or mental stress, an orgasm can work wonders to set your body back to equilibrium and give your brain a break, as well as a much-needed overdose of some happy feelings. So ditch the warm glass of milk before bed and the Advil for your cramps, and get down to business instead.
]]>Though red is most commonly associated with menstrual blood, your period can come in many colors, depending on your health. For this reason, it’s helpful to know the different possible period blood colors to feel confident (or very afraid) about your body’s equilibrium.
To understand how period blood could come in different colors, you first need to understand the process that creates period blood. Your uterus is lined with endometrium, a specialized vascularized tissue with spiralized arteries that provides blood to the uterus when a fertilized egg is implanted. When this egg fails to be fertilized because of your newfound morals and/or rejection of hot girl summer, the arteries constrict, and the endometrium starts to break away in pieces in a gradual, controlled process.
The actual blood we see during our period comes from broken blood vessels as the endometrium tissue detaches from the arteries. By the time it reaches your underwear, the color is influenced by the amount of time it has had to react with oxygen and oxidize.
That means your period blood will look different as your period progresses since the dead tissue being shed from the deeper layers of the uterus will have more time to oxidize and appear more brown or dark reddish, as opposed to the bright red blood we see during peak period times when the tissue closer to your cervix is being shed. However, there are some colors that suggest problems within your body, so you should have a general idea of what the different colors indicate.
Period blood that is brown or dark red and carries a certain thickness is totally normal and usually appears towards the beginning or end of your period. The blood takes on this color when it is older and has taken longer to exit your uterus (it had time to oxidize and change from red to brown). Blood clots can also take on this brownish-red color, but that’s also normal for this time of your flow.
Brown discharge or spotting can also be an early indication of pregnancy. Yay! If you’re already *confirmed* pregnant, brown discharge or spotting can indicate a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy when the fertilized egg implants itself in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. Less yay…
Ah, our scarlet friend. The famous bright red color we encounter during our periods is the freshest blood and usually comes into full effect during the second or third day of the cycle. Since it is newer blood, it has had less time to react with oxygen and therefore keeps its bright color when appearing on your menstrual products.
Pink blood or spotting can occur for a few reasons. When taking hormonal birth control that lowers estrogen levels, pinkish blood results from the subsequent lighter flow. Or pink blood can happen when period blood mixes with cervical fluid. It can also be caused by sexual intercourse, in which tiny tears in the vaginal wall bleed a bit. Basically, the blood is not actually pink but just diluted.
However, when pink discharge occurs sporadically outside your menstrual cycle and is unrelated to sexual intercourse, it could be a symptom of cervical cancer.
Orange fluid can occur when blood mixes with cervical fluid, but it can also be a sign of infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis. An infection that would cause orange fluid would usually be accompanied by other symptoms, such as vaginal itching, foul-smelling discharge, and general discomfort. If you are experiencing this all-star lineup of symptoms, talk to your doctor.
Misery loves company, and grey period blood can also indicate bacterial vaginosis. Again, this is usually accompanied by itching, discomfort, and foul-smelling discharge and should be evaluated by a doctor.
So there you have it, the color wheel of period blood. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion you might have about your menstrual blood colors and their meanings. If your colorings align with any of the colors listed that could be linked to infection, contact your doctor. If your period blood appears as a color not listed here, such as blue or green, you have bigger things to worry about and may be in a Sci-Fi movie or poorly written TV pilot.
]]>Menopause is when the body naturally stops producing reproductive hormones and is most commonly signaled by 12 months without a period. When estrogen and testosterone levels start to decline, so does one’s sex drive; lower levels of these hormones cause a drop in blood supply to the genitals, affecting arousal, the ability to orgasm, and comfort during sex.
The most common side effects of menopause that affect one’s sex life are vaginal dryness and decreased libido, both caused by the newly lower estrogen levels and reduced blood flow to the vagina. Menopause can also cause the vaginal tissue to become more fragile and less stretchy, making sex uncomfortable and sometimes painful, especially when paired with vaginal dryness.
Other symptoms of menopause that can indirectly affect your sex life are hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, depression, stress, and anxiety.
Like many others, you probably aren’t ready to roll over and call it quits on sex just because your body is experiencing changes. If you’re interested in seeking options for improving your sex life during menopause, you are in luck, as many treatments help people adjust to this new time in their life.
The most effective treatment option for battling the effects of menopause is estrogen therapy, wherein estrogen is ingested in pill, patch, spray, or gel form to replenish the body’s declining supply and offset symptoms associated with low estrogen levels. However, there are inherent risks involved with taking concentrated estrogen (uterine cancer and sometimes stroke), so doctors recommend that estrogen therapy should only be given in the lowest dosage for the shortest amount of time necessary.
When explicitly targeting vaginal dryness, topical estrogen can be applied as creams, vaginal tablets, or vaginal rings (devices implanted in the vagina that secrete estrogen locally for up to three months). Water-soluble vaginal lubricants are also a great go-to in the moment to relieve vaginal dryness.
If systemic hormone treatments and/or vaginal estrogen therapy isn’t for you, there are still many ways you can improve your sex life once reaching menopause. Many couples find that focusing on foreplay, such as erotic massages, watching porn, or masturbation, has favorable results toward reaching orgasm. It can also be worthwhile to research different penetrative positions to find one that is the most comfortable and pleasurable for both parties.
Another option is to learn to enjoy other forms of intimacy that come naturally once your libido is lowered. Sexuality is not intrinsically tied to sex and sex drive, so if you’re not feeling aroused or in the mood, there’s no need to force yourself to want to have sex.
The changes menopause brings take some getting used to, including learning to feel fulfilled romantically and sensually as your relationship evolves, even with less penetrative sex. Wanting to be intimate with your partner to show love and passion does not always need to include sex; if you are experiencing a lower sex drive but still want to be intimate, you can try cuddling, romantic dinners, massages, and other forms of dedicated quality time.
It’s important to remember that even though prescription drug narratives push the idea that older women should still be sexually active--and of course, they can be--the nature of intercourse changes as your body ages. Couples will have less sex as they age due to the natural decline in libido, vaginal dryness, and/or erectile dysfunction.
Menopause is difficult, but it shouldn’t take away your ability to have sex. If you are struggling with symptoms of menopause that negatively impact your sex life, such as vaginal dryness or decreased libido, there are estrogen treatments and vaginal lubricants that can be of great service in your bedroom. Or, if you’re comfortable in this new stage of your life and don’t feel the need to prioritize sex anymore, you can begin exploring non-sexual intimacy practices with your beloved to keep the love and magic alive, even when sex isn’t sounding too appealing anymore.
